Do you like Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream? Ya I know silly question. But have you and your family made some homemade ice cream together as a fun family treat? It is fun and great way to spend a hot summer day with your kids.
The problem is that there are SO many recipes out there that it is almost daunting. Which one should you try? Which one will work? I LOVE tried and true recipes and when I find one I want to share!
For my step-daughter's birthday we made her favorite flavor of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream, Cherry Garcia. We made it home made in our ice cream maker. It was the best recipe for home made ice cream that I have tried yet and this one can be adjusted to just about any flavor.
Here is goes:
Cherry Garcia Homemade Ice Cream
1/4 overflowing cup shaved dark chocolate (I used Hershey's Special Dark and when I grated it was like chunks and slivers both.)
1/4 overflowing cup fresh bing cherries, pitted and quartered (In season and on sale now!)
2 large eggs
3/4 cup sugar
2 cups whipping cream
1 cup milk
pinch of salt
Place the shaved chocolate flakes and the cherries in separate bowls. Cover and refrigerate. Heat the milk, salt, and sugar in saucepan. Whisk the eggs in a bowl and gradually add some of the warm milk stirring constantly and scraping the bottom with a heat resistant spatula until the custard thickens enough to coat the spatula. Strain the custard into the heavy cream and stir. Chill thoroughly, and transfer the mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions (about 20-45 minutes). After the ice cream stiffens (about 2 minutes before it is done), add the chocolate and the cherries. Then continue freezing until the ice cream is ready and then place in freezer and freeze for about 2 hours before serving.
Now if you don't like cherries, you could mix just about anything in the last two minutes of this recipe. It tastes fabulous!
